If you have never heard the word ‘Margaritaville’ then it’s unlikely you will have ever heard of Jimmy Buffett (as in all you can eat) Jimmy is an American musical legend, who although now in his 70’s still plays to sold out stadiums across the United States, bringing his unique island style tunes to his fans, affectionately known as Parrotheads! That is when he isn’t surfing the islands, writing novels or flying his own plane to his upcoming tour dates. Several of which are taking place in Dublin, London & Paris! Margaritaville, the title of one of his most popular songs, name of his restaurant chain and a mystical vacation destination usually found at the bottom of a bottle of tequila, is also a state of mind.. It has its own University Ambassador program, which aims to promote the laid back living of its creator! The relaxed vibes of the Margaritaville lifestyle Is something I have been committed to since first hearing Jimmys live ‘feeding frenzy’ album played on repeat during a family car trip from West Virginia to Niagra falls back in 1997! Well if I wasn’t a parrot head after that trip then my Dad had turned me mad trying! The Ambassador program spoke to me like religion calls out to ministers! So like all of history’s good ideas, it was with beer in hand that I decided to join, well apply to join, it’s not a simple process. Never one for letting a few prerequisites stand in my way, namely the little issue of the fact I’m not currently enrolled in University, have never been enrolled in a University plus my location being thousands of miles from the nearest Margaritaville. Well that didn’t seem to matter. Amazingly, after several weeks of waiting all the while convinced they had binned my lager fuelled yet serious application, I randomly received an email advising me that I had made the cut to the next stage & inviting me to submit some further info. I immediately replied, apologising for the misunderstanding with clarification that I didn’t meet any of the eligibility criteria.
It’s always nice to be thanked for your honesty & it seems MU are well aware of my location & educational circumstance. Regardless of these I had seemingly impressed the Dean of Admissions and I find myself progressing to the next stage of the process. It seems that somebody at Margaritaville thinks having an international representative was something worth pursuing! I can’t say much more about the next stage of the process other than i have dusted off my camera, stocked up my bar and acquired an inflatable palm tree How far will I get on my journey? Who knows, the aim is to end up where the weather suits my close Fins up!
