An American Classic that to be honest hadn't been on our radar until by chance it started popping up on our Twitter feed.. Sure we had seen it In the beer aisle on our trips to the states but for some reason we always passed over it in favour of landshark, bud or coors light, amongst others Boy did we make a mistake! On a recent trip to the states we picked a few cans up in the drug store! Only in America would they think to sell beer in a pharmacy! The nation where you can pick up a six pack while shopping for medication and even pick up a prescription for ailments caused by over indulging! Anyway.. The Pabst brewing company was established in Milwaukee in 1844 and is currently based in Los Angeles! Originally called best select, then Pabst Select the current name comes from the blue ribbons tied around the neck of the bottle in the late 1800's. The beer suffered a decline in the early 1980's, having peaked with sales of around 18 million barrels in the late 70's Following a number of changes in management which failed to reverse the slump, it wasn't until early 200's that the beer brand began to recover. This followed steady revival & Blue ribbon has now obtained somewhat of a cult following, thanks to its inclusion in modern culture and its low price point in the economic downturn Things continued in the right direction and In 2015 the company won the "best large brewing company of the year" award at the Great American Beer Festival Two 24oz cans went down super easy, at just over 4.7%, I found it to be full and refreshing! A good aftertaste that didn't dwindle! Its got a good colour and looks like a proper beer that would make light brews quiver in fear and respect, quite rightly so... Calories are worth it when it's come to taste and proper refreshment! It's a great drinker and one that would go well paired with sports and BBQ!
Like a lot of American products, it can be hard to find a stockist locally, this is one we would love to see closer to home.. 4/5
